MMA flooring: methyl methacrylate systems

MMA is the resin you specify when time or temperature rules everything else out. It reaches service hardness in about an hour rather than overnight, and it cures well below freezing, where epoxy simply will not. Those two properties are the entire case for it — and they are worth a great deal in a cold room, a commercial kitchen or any building that cannot close.

It is not a general-purpose floor. It costs more per square foot than epoxy and it smells strongly while it cures. Specified where those trade-offs are worth making, it solves problems no other chemistry can. Specified as a default, it is an expensive way to buy a floor you did not need.

Where it earns its place

Four situations that call for MMA

The first is the cold room, cooler or blast freezer. Bringing a freezer up to ambient so an epoxy can cure, then pulling it back down, costs days of lost storage and a large energy bill. MMA is laid at temperature, so the room comes back into service without ever leaving its operating range.

The second is the building that cannot close. A hospital corridor, a hotel kitchen, a food plant running six days a week — the floor goes down overnight and takes traffic in the morning. The cost of the resin is trivial against the cost of the shutdown it avoids.

The third is thermal shock. Floors that take boiling water, steam cleaning or hot oil, then chill again, move constantly at the bond line. MMA's flexibility and its fully bonded build handle that cycling better than a rigid, thick-film epoxy. Where wash-down is the dominant condition rather than cure speed, urethane cement is usually the better answer — that comparison is on our systems page.

The fourth is winter work. In the Lower Mainland an unheated warehouse or an exposed loading dock in January can sit below the minimum cure temperature on an epoxy datasheet for weeks. MMA keeps the schedule.

You are not buying a better floor than epoxy. You are buying an hour instead of a night, and a cure that happens at minus twenty.

Cure and temperature figures are general characteristics of each chemistry. The numbers that go in a specification come from the datasheet of the specific system proposed, at the slab temperature measured on site.

On a real project

How an MMA install actually runs

  1. Assessment, including temperature and moisture.

    Slab condition, existing coatings and moisture at depth. MMA is fast, not forgiving — it still needs a sound, correctly profiled substrate.

  2. Ventilation and occupancy planning.

    This is the step people skip and regret. The odour travels through return-air paths, stairwells and service risers. Where a building stays occupied, the work is scheduled at night and the air handling is planned before a date is agreed.

  3. Mechanical preparation.

    Diamond grinding or shot blasting to the CSP profile the datasheet specifies. See surface preparation.

  4. Catalyst dosed to the measured temperature.

    The initiator ratio is adjusted to the actual conditions on the day. Too little and it does not cure; too much and the working time disappears before the material is placed. This is the part that needs a crew who has done it before.

  5. Build, broadcast and seal, then hand back.

    Primer, body and topcoat go down in one continuous operation because the pot life is short. The floor is documented at handover — what was installed, at what temperature, over what readings.

What is MMA flooring?

MMA stands for methyl methacrylate, an acrylic resin used to build seamless floor systems. It is applied like epoxy but cures by a different chemical route, which lets it reach service hardness in roughly an hour and lets it be installed at temperatures where epoxy will not cure at all. It is the system chosen when a floor has to go back into use the same shift, or has to be laid in a freezer.

How fast can an MMA floor be walked on?

Roughly an hour to foot traffic under normal conditions, with the exact window set by the catalyst dose, the ambient and slab temperature and the system build. That is the property people buy MMA for. It is still a measured window, not a guarantee, and it is confirmed against the manufacturer datasheet for the specific system before the schedule is agreed.

Can MMA be installed in a freezer or cold room?

Yes, and that is one of its defining uses. MMA cures well below freezing, so a cold room or blast freezer can be recoated without being brought up to ambient temperature and then pulled back down. Epoxy and most urethane systems will not cure reliably in those conditions.

What is the downside of MMA?

Odour during installation. The monomer has a strong acrylic smell that carries well beyond the work area while it is curing, which means ventilation planning and, in occupied buildings, usually night or weekend work. The smell dissipates once cured. MMA also costs more per square foot than epoxy, so it is specified where the cure speed or the low-temperature capability earns that premium, not as a default.
