Freeze–thaw is a movement problem
Whistler puts concrete through something the Lower Mainland does not: repeated freezing and thawing, often eighty or more cycles in a season. Water that has entered a crack expands as it freezes and levers the crack wider every single time, so a hairline that would sit stable in Vancouver for years opens quickly here.
That means flexibility matters more than hardness. A membrane specified for Whistler has to stay elastic at low temperature and keep bridging cracks while the slab moves, which rules out several products that perform perfectly well at sea level.
Then there is the summer. Resort decks take intense ultraviolet at altitude, so the wear coat has to be fully aliphatic or it will amber and chalk within a season or two. And the resort calendar is unforgiving — work windows are shoulder season, which we plan around rather than negotiate.
